Flores pulled away down the stretch to win in 17:57 over the 3-mile course and notch a two-second victory over Stein in a battle of the top two runners from the 1997 City finals. It was the first loss of the season for Stein, the defending City champion, against a section opponent.

Flores, a junior, also defeated Stein, a sophomore, in last year's preliminaries for Stein's only loss against City competition. Stein, however, rebounded to win the City title with Flores slowed by a hip injury. Flores and Stein are expected to battle again for the section title in the City championships Nov. 21 at Pierce.

``The person who wins City prelims doesn't always win City finals,'' Flores said. ``Whoever feels best next Saturday is going to win.''

Flores had the upper hand Tuesday. As the two battled down the final 100 meters, Flores said Stein instructed her to ``Go ahead and take it.''

``I told her `No, I want it next week,' '' Flores said. ``We kind of left it at that. At the finish line, she was tired and so was I, but if it was City finals I could have totally gone harder. I was staying behind her to see what her pace was going to be like.''

Stein defeated Flores by 28 seconds, 18:24 to 18:52, in the Mt. San Antonio College Mt. San Antonio College (commonly called Mt. ``I was going all out, but my sprint wasn't very good,'' Stein said. ``Last year, she was right there. I figured she would do better than at Mt. SAC. Our team did very well. We'll have to wait and see what happens.''

North Hollywood, lifted by Stein in second and the eighth and 10th place finishes of sisters Leticia and Daisy Del Rio Del Rio (rē`ō), city (1990 pop. 30,705), seat of Val Verde co., W Tex., on the Rio Grande opposite Ciudad Acuña, Mexico; founded 1868, inc. 1911. , finished second in its heat with 63 points to advance to the City finals. The top five teams in each of two heats as well as individuals among the top 15 qualified.

Defending City champion Birmingham won with 34 points with five runners among the top 14 to take a step toward its third City title in four years. Dina Melendez was third in 18:41 and Tiffany Burgess was fifth in 19:37 for the Patriots. Erika Dolezal (20:11), Michelle Rivera (20:25) and Nuria Vanegas (20:33) rounded out the Birmingham scoring in seventh, 11th and 14th.

Birmingham's other scoring runners, Lino Ortiz (16:45), and Martin Regalado and Alfredo Murillo (both 16:53), also dipped under 17 minutes in 11th, 13th and 14th.

Belmont was a winner in the other boys' and girls' heats. The Belmont boys, winners of 13 of the last 16 City titles, recorded a 54-77 victory over Garfield while the girls' team edged Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  64-65 to win its heat.
