CITY SECTION ROUNDUP: WHITAKER HELPS CLEVELAND TOP BIRMINGHAM.

Byline: Daily News

Cleveland High won a football game Friday night because quarterback Eddie Whitaker refused to lose.

Although his numbers weren't spectacular, Whitaker led the Cavaliers to a 26-23 Northwest Valley Conference victory over Birmingham.

Whitaker was sacked three times and finished with minus-2 yards rushing. He also completed just 7 of 16 passes for 95 yards and a touchdown.

And yet one rush and one pass made the difference.

Trailing, 20-17, with about a minute to play, Whitaker faded back to pass but found no one open. So he scrambled scram·ble

Two plays and a controversial pass-interference call later, Whitaker hit George Covington from 8-yards out for the winning score with 7 seconds remaining.

``He's a good thinker,'' said Covington, who caught his first touchdown pass - going back to those same Pop Warner days. ``He doesn't make too many stupid mistakes. He put it right in my chest.''

Before Whitaker's heroics, Bethea was the Cleveland hero, scoring three times to help his team take a 20-10 third quarter lead. He ran in from 27 and 19 yards and scored on a 55-yard punt return In American and Canadian football a punt return is one of the punt receiving team's options to respond to a punt.
