CITY SECTION ROUNDUP: SYLMAR CRUSHES RESEDA.

Byline: Daily News

Any concerns Jeff Engilman had about his Sylmar High football team's inconsistency were put to rest Friday night.

Sylmar routed host Reseda 42-0 in a key Valley Pac-8 Conference game. The Spartans rolled to a 35-0 halftime lead behind 405 yards of total offense, including 294 on the ground. Sylmar improved to 6-2-1 and 6-0 in conference play while halting halt·ing

David Contreras, a 5-foot-9 junior, rushed for 174 yards on 20 carries and had touchdown runs of 3 and 32 yards in the first half. Anthony Wells (11 carries, 64 yards) also scored on runs of 1 and 2 yards. Quarterback Noah Albiston was 9 of 11 passing for 111 yards.

Sylmar's defense had three interceptions and held Reseda (5-4, 4-2) to 107 yards, including 45 in the first half.

``The last couple weeks, we started sluggish and let teams get confident on us,'' Engilman said. ``I told the kids I wanted two good halves tonight. They're starting to smell playoffs, I think.''

Sylmar scored on five of its first six possessions. Reseda's quarterbacks completed just 1 of 19 passes.

``That was one of the ugliest things I've ever seen,'' Reseda coach Joel Schaeffer said.

Reseda, coming off wins over Monroe, Canoga Park and North Hollywood, was forced to punt eight times.
