In other championship-bracket games:

--Venice d. Verdugo Hills 3-0: Senior Mi Tran led the Dons of Tujunga with 11 assists and five digs in a 15-4, 15-0, 15-6 loss to the seventh-seeded Gondoliers (10-4) at Venice.

Venice was led by Evelyn Bluthenthal's 17 kills, four blocks and three aces. Juni Okeya added 26 assists and five digs for the Gondoliers.

--Sylmar d. Manual Arts 3-0: The Spartans (12-2) opened defense of their City championship by defeating the visiting Toilers (11-3), the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum.  League champions, 15-4, 15-6, 15-9.

Fourth-seeded Sylmar dominated net play in the first game behind All-City middle blocker Katrina Delaney, who had 11 kills in the match. Junior setter Gabriela Herrera recorded 22 assists for the Spartans.

In the second game, Herrera got Sylmar off to a quick lead with strong serving, including four aces. Sylmar's other returning All-City player, outside hitter Sally Teague, had seven kills, as did outside hitter Maria Becerra.

Manual Arts was able to play a tight third game after the Spartans built a big lead and cleared the bench. Jennifer Temblador had five kills and four blocks for the Toilers.

``We don't have the same experience as last year, but if we get steady play, we can make another run at the title,'' Sylmar coach Bob Thomson Robert 'Bob' Thomson was an English footballer who played during the early 20th century, mainly prior to World War I.

Playing as a forward, Thomson carved out a career in the game despite having only one eye, resulting from a childhood accident with a firework.
