Reed's performance in the City Section preliminaries at Birmingham High only complicated matters.

Reed turned in the top qualifying marks with heat victories in the 100 in 12.05 seconds, the 200 in a wind-aided 23.98 and the 400 in 56.19. She also anchored the Toreadors' 1,600 relay of Schquay Brignac, Zoiah Koushki and Deneeka Torrey to a heat victory in 4:00.03.

Taft staked its claim as the team to beat, qualifying individuals in 10 of 15 events.

Torrey clocked a school-record 42.79 for the state's No. 2 mark, nearly second faster than her lifetime best of 43.74 run last season. She was also the top qualifier qual·i·fi·er

Brignac, a two-time City high jump champion, advanced in her specialties, the triple jump and long jump.

To improve her chances in the state meet, Reed dropped the 100 earlier this season to concentrate on the 400, an event in which she has run 55.30 this season for the best mark in the City by over a second.

Reed returned to the 100 after the Toreadors' scratched their 400 relay in last week's West Valley League finals to pick up more points in individual events for the City championships.

``I like the 400 relay but we all knew it would be a better decision,'' Reed said. ``We figured it would give us a better chance all around.''

Birmingham, Carson and Cleveland could be in the mix for the girls' title if Taft falters.

Cleveland should score well with three-time City champion Jessica Cosby, the No. 1 qualifier at 45-6, and sophomore Michelle Stinnette, a qualifier in the 100 (12.27) and 200 (24.98) and freshman Brynne Steward, who advanced in the 100 high hurdles (15.57) and 300 low hurdles (46.55).
