CITY SECTION GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL: TAFT IS TOO MUCH FOR VERDUGO HILLS.

Byline: Daily News

The Taft High of Woodland Hills girls' volleyball team, the second seed in the City Section playoffs, turned in one of its most dominant performances of the season Wednesday en route to a 25-5, 25-11, 25-14 quarterfinal victory over No. 10 Verdugo Hills of Tujunga (10-10).

``We couldn't handle their speed and we couldn't handle their size,'' said Verdugo Hills coach Will Reinhart, who received seven digs from Chantelle Labbe. ``It was like blitzkreig or shellshock (in the first game). That's what it felt like.''

Taft (29-4) committed only four hitting errors, with setter setter: see sporting dog.

But Sylmar, the fourth seed, didn't have much success meeting its other objectives of tough serving and strong front-row play either, resulting in a 25-20, 25-19, 25-20 loss.

Coach Bob Thomason's team couldn't keep the No. 5 Dolphins (17-5) off-balance the way it was able to do in the teams' first meeting Sept. 18. Sylmar (14-2) won that match behind the hitting of Alma Nunez and Carmen Carmen

``Because of our poor passing we couldn't do anything offensively,'' Thomason said.
