 show up made the biggest news in Monday's City Section cross-country prelims at Pierce College In 2006 the Library won a national Excellence award. Academics
Pierce College offers associate's degrees, mainly in the arts and sciences. There are also certificate programs in early childhood education, social services, dental hygienist, and others.

Her absence helps Birmingham of Lake Balboa's Emmaline Hartel, who is trying to become the first female runner in City history to win three section individual titles. Hartel covered the 2.9-mile Pierce course in 18 minutes, 54 seconds Monday, the fastest girls' time of the day. Birmingham placed all five runners in the top 10 of its heat as the Patriots ran the fastest team time.

Taft of Woodland Hills and Kennedy of Granada Hills were the other area schools to advance to the girls' finals out of that heat.

El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

 of Woodland Hills' Sarah Roth won the other girls' heat, in 18:55. Eagle Rock also advanced out of the second girls' heat to Saturday's City finals at Pierce College.

Monroe of North Hills' boys won their heat but were more than a minute off the day's best mark, posted by defending City champ San Pedro. Monroe's Gabriel Guzman won his race, in 15:58, as he prepares to defend his section individual title.

Taft and Birmingham were the other area teams to advance to the boys' finals. Both were second in their heats.

Chatsworth's Amanda Barreto (19:58), San Fernando's Valerie Sanchez (20:02) and Monroe's Stephanie Alarcon (20:40) qualified for the girls' City finals as individuals.
