Byline: Kirby Lee Special to the Daily News

Nicolette Viray is taking a break from swimming, but it has not slowed the Granada Hills High junior in cross country.

``I know swimming helped my running, so I was kind of scared I am going to get slower and slower,'' Viray said.

Those fears proved unfounded Wednesday. Viray sliced 30 seconds off her previous Pierce College best of 19:11 for a 26-second victory over Birmingham's Dina Melendez. Tiffany Tiffany, Tiffanie (UK)

Three weeks ago, Viray, who helped Granada Hills to its fourth consecutive City swimming and diving title last spring, stopped swimming for her first extended break from the sport since starting at age 9. Her goal Wednesday was to run under 19:30.

``I am kind of mad because now I feel I have to beat my time,'' Viray said. ``I didn't like swimming because I had to make goals. I don't like making high goals. Running is just for fun.''

Viray, along with her twin Claudette, who was 14th, helped Granada Hills finish third in the team competition with 78 points.

Birmingham, paced by the 2-3 finish of Melendez and Burgess, notched a 32-60 triumph over Taft despite an illness to the Patriots' No. 2 runner Erika Dolezal, who did not finish among the team's top five. Nuria Vanegas, Michelle Rivera and Melissa Astete rounded out the Birmingham scoring in seventh, 10th and 12th.

Ruiz, the City Section frosh-soph champion who transferred to Birmingham after moving into the Patriots' attendance district last week, won in 16:14 for a 37-second victory over teammate Martin Regalado. Lino Ortiz, Alfredo Murillo and Mateo Gonzalez completed the Patriots' scoring in fourth, fifth and seventh.

``Everything happened so fast,'' Ruiz said. ``I feel a lot more comfortable. It was hard to run against my former teammates, but I am glad to have a good team behind me and a chance to make it to the state meet.''

The Monroe boys, powered by the 1-2-3 finish of Juan Granados (16:22), Leon Buchanon (16:28) and Germain Ortiz (16:29), held off Reseda 56-72 to defend their Valley Pac-8 championship.

The top four teams and the first 15 finishers not on a qualifying team advance to next Tuesday's City Section preliminaries at Pierce College.

Viray ran in a lead pack which included Birmingham's Burgess and Melindez and Taft's Isaura Rodriguez in the early stages of the Northwest Valley Conference girls' final. Viray, however, surged to a 15-meter lead on the longest downhill of the first circuit shortly after the first mile and was never challenged thereafter.

``I tried to pace myself,'' Viray said. ``I don't like being first. Winning was in the back of my mind, but it wasn't my main goal. I just wanted to try my hardest.''
