Both of Jones' times are faster than the championship-winning times posted in the Southern Section Division I meet.

``I didn't expect it,'' Jones said after the prelims. ``I did a lot better than I thought I would. But I usually do better at prelims than finals.''

Jones' records from last year (23.88 in the 50, and 51.81 in the 100) were also set in the prelims and paved pave

Last Wednesday, the Highlanders eclipsed the mark (3:41.12) established by last year's Granada Hill's team in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:39.60, and they broke the 1997 200 medley relay record (1:54.51) with a swim of 1:53.30.

In the boys' meet, Taft's Dimitry Uchitel finished first in the 50 freestyle in 23.39 at the prelims. He was also second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.96. He should feel the heat from Granada Hills' William Chae, who was fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.34) and second in the 100 freestyle (51.50) at the prelims.
