CITY SECTION BOYS' TENNIS: `MISSILE' RIGHT ON TARGET MKRTCHIAN BECOMES FIRST SOCES PLAYER TO REACH CITY FINALS.

Byline: GIDEON RUBIN Special to the Daily News

The ``Russian Missile'' has struck again.

Ken Mkrtchian, a Moscow-born freshman tennis sensation at Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies (also Sherman Oaks CES or SOCES) is a (magnet) public school in the San Fernando Valley, Southern California, United States.  of Reseda, who is known by the aforementioned moniker (1) A name, title or alias. Unseeded Mkrtchian upset No. 4 J.R. Sarmiento of Carson 6-4, 7-5 in a City semifinal match Wednesday at Balboa Sports Complex in Encino. He will face No. 2 Eric Lee of Granada Hills in today's 1 p.m. championship match at the same site.

Lee, a Calabasas transfer, defeated Roosevelt of East Los Angeles' Sal Romero 6-3, 6-4.

SOCES SOCES Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies  won the Invitational title in 2000, but hadn't had an individual advance beyond the second round.

``It's for me and my school,'' Mkrtchian said. ``It's really exciting because everybody at my school is happy for me because someone is going forward.

``We're not exactly a sports school Sports School may refer to:

. We joke that we have the best students, but not the best athletes.''

In doubles, Granada Hills' Jeremy Choo and Vinnie Amor defeated Palisades' Michael Light and Seth Mendelkern 6-1, 6-4 in a semifinal. They will face Palisades' Sepehr Safii and Stephen Surjue, who defeated Taft of Woodland Hills' Naseef Ayon and Noushad Simno 6-3, 6-1, in today's title match.

Mkrtchian's semifinal win wasn't a complete shocker shock·er

He admitted he was ``a little ticked'' when he learned he wasn't seeded.

``It puts more pressure on them. I think it makes them nervous,'' Mkrtchian said of his opponents. ``It's hard for a seeded player to lose to an unseeded player.''

SOCES interim coach Mark Sobel said Mkrtchian joined the team at the prodding of longtime coach Bobby Frederick, who went on medical leave after undergoing hip-replacement surgery.

Frederick said he told Mkrtchian that playing varsity-level City tennis would challenge him and expose him to college scouts.

``We, as a small school, get looked down upon by the regular high schools, so every time we defeat a regular high school in competition in any sport we do magnificent things for the small-school program and for the whole magnet program,'' Sobel said.
