Amaya, one of the area's leading scorers with 25 goals this season, was held out Friday in a dispute over his eligibility. Birmingham coach E.B. Madha said Amaya played in a club game Feb. 9, something forbidden by the section during the season.

the victory later. It made little difference, though, as Harry Aroyan scored three goals to lead the second-seeded Lancers (18-1-5) to the easy victory.

``We didn't really know what was going to happen with Johny,'' said Ortiz, who first heard from Madha on Thursday. ``But we always say we're an 11-man team, not a one-man team.

``We had to show it today playing without him. And I think the score tells everything.''

Before the game, though, Madha pulled from his pocket a lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime.  card for the Huracan club team on the date in question, with Amaya's name on it for a League America game. A signature was next to Amaya's name along with a signed statement on the back that Madha said came from the league commissioner.

Madha also said he had accounts from former Birmingham players who played in the game with Amaya. The club game also took place on Birmingham's field. Madha added he has removed one player from his team each of the past two years for violating the rule.

Amaya, however, said the signature came from somebody else and he didn't play in the game. He said he was in San Pedro on Feb. 9 with his father.

``This is messed up,'' said Amaya, who watched the first half from the stands and second half on the bench. ``I had a college scout here from (Cal State Northridge) to watch me today.''

But Ortiz was confident Amaya will be cleared to play Wednesday in the second round.
