CITY SECTION BOYS' TENNIS: ECR, G.H. GET READY FOR FINALS.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Staff Writer

Granada Hills High needs a triple play from its doubles teams if the Highlanders' City Section boys' tennis championship dreams are feasible.

(16-0) relies on its singles foursome of Matt Jones, James Jones, James, 1921–77, American novelist, b. Robinson, Ill. Written in the tradition of naturalism, his novels often celebrate the endurance of man. From Here to Eternity  Magsino, Dan Nguyen and Bruce Aiken. They won 15 of 16 possible points in a 27-2 1/2 rout of fifth-seeded Marshall.

The No. 2 Highlanders' (14-2) meal ticket is three almost perfect doubles teams. They swept nine sets against sixth seed Van Nuys (15-1) in a 22 1/2-7 victory.

Among them, the tandems of Anand Nurthy and Brad Steinberg, Dustin Sorotsky and Alex Tokar, and Ananya Sreepathi and Steve Choi lost one regular-season City Section match.

``It's definitely going to come down to doubles domination coming through and sweeping,'' said Sorotsky, the Highlanders' senior captain who is unbeaten playing with Tokar. The No. 2 team won their sets 6-4, 6-2 and 6-3 against the Wolves.

Steinberg, another senior, opened the year on the singles ladder but joined Nurthy early in the year. They've gone unbeaten ever since.

``I think the doubles is basically our foundation of the team,'' said No. 1 singles player Nima Roshan, who scored 6-0, 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1 wins Monday. ``We easily have the best doubles teams in the City.''

The same statement applies to ECR's singles ladder. Jones and Magsino are senior veterans, and the level drops little with No. 3 Nguyen and No. 4 Aiken.

``It's almost like a repeat of last year,'' ECR coach Marvin Jones Marvin Jones may refer to:

said of his team's 17-12 1/2 win over Granada in the City finals. ``Their doubles are strong. Our singles are strong.''

Singles has won out over doubles so far. ECR beat Granada Hills twice in West Valley League matches, though a round-robin schedule is in effect for the postseason.

``Sometimes, that format is an advantage or disadvantage,'' Highlanders coach Ron Wood Ronald David "Ronnie" Wood (born June 1, 1947 in Hillingdon, London) is an English rock guitarist and bassist best known as a member of The Rolling Stones, Faces, and The Jeff Beck Group.  said. ``In this case, I don't really think it's either way. I wouldn't mind playing them in the old format.''

Van Nuys, making its first appearance in the Championship (formerly 4-A) semifinals, got two singles points each from Eugene Han and Danny Kim.

The Wolves, unbeaten in preseason and Valley Mission League play, upset third-seeded Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  to reach the semifinals.
