CITY SECTION BASEBALL: SAN FERNANDO IS NO. 4 AND UNHAPPY ABOUT IT.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

If the City Section baseball final is going to be an all-Valley game, as it often is, it will have to feature a team outside of the top four.

Defending City champion Chatsworth was unanimously picked as the No. 1 seed when pairings were decided Monday at Hamilton High, but the only other local team to receive a spot in the top four is San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina

The Valley Mission League was voted the third-stronges league, but Valley Mission champion San Fernando ended up behind No. 3 San Pedro - which came from a weaker league - and No. 2 Roosevelt. Being seeded fourth instead of second or third means the Tigers (19-11) are in the same half of the 16-team City Championship bracket as Chatsworth (24-1-1).

``Look at the strength of league,'' Gomez said. ``They should go by that.''

San Fernando, which won just five games last year and was eliminated in the first round of the Division playoffs (now known as the Invitational in·vi·ta·tion·al

San Fernando could be the third local team Chatsworth has to beat before reaching the June 6 final at Dodger Stadium     [ . The Chancellors, who have played in the past two championship games, open against No. 16 Grant of Van Nuys and could face No. 9 Kennedy of Granada Hills in the second round if the Cougars beat No. 8 Carson.

Although fewer area teams received high seeds than in recent years - three of the top four were Valley teams last season - more qualified for the playoffs than a year ago. Of the 32 teams in the postseason, 14 are locals. Birmingham of Van Nuys earned the No. 2 seed in the Invitational bracket, which features the lower 16 teams. Last year's Division champion Cleveland of Reseda is fourth in the Invitational.

of Woodland Hills was considered the favorite to meet Chatsworth in the final. The possibility remains since the two are in opposite halves of the bracket, but the West Valley runners-up, who were swept in their three-game season series against the Chancellors, are seeded sixth.
