And so, for the fifth consecutive season, the Toreadors will play for the City Section championship, having beaten their West Valley League rival 15-12, 15-2, 6-15, 15-3 Tuesday night at Taft High.

Next up is another league foe, top-seeded and undefeated Chatsworth. The two schools will play Friday at Cal State Northridge at 7:30 p.m. If the Toreadors win, they will be the only City school ever to win four consecutive titles. Taft (10-4) lost in the City final 1998 and has won the past three. The Toreadors often had a go-to hitter such as Joe Nargi, Mike Gledhill or Bryan Capper cap·per

While Granada Hills (11-3) worked on Rodstein and limited him to eight kills in the first three games, Zagha had 10 kills and three blocks and Shimon had 10 kills in the same span. Bellante had six kills, four blocks and two aces, and he served nine points in the second game.

Zagha finished with 14 kills and three blocks. Shimon had 12 kills and Rodstein had 11 kills and seven blocks. Setter setter: see sporting dog.

 Maihan Noorzay had 47 assists.

``That's the whole point of a team, to be that deep,'' Rodstein said. ``I rely on my teammates as they rely on me. I'm only as good as my team is. It's good to see they're there for me as I was for them.''

Mercado also had issues to overcome. He's just 26, much younger than his predecessor, so his players had to get used to him. They thought he could be their buddy, but Mercado quickly showed that's wrong. He structured his practices similar to UCLA's: Practice hard with match- like intensity to win playing time.

At one point, Taft was 2-4. Now, the Toreadors will have a chance to successfully defend their title a third consecutive time.

``They started believing in each other,'' Mercado said, ``and they started believing in me a little bit.''

Taku Uechi led Granada Hills with 18 kills and Kris Manansala added 15 kills.
