And the ending lived up to expectations as Sylmar needed seven tries to secure the final point in its 3-1 victory. Spartans junior Domonique Cisneros placed the match-winning shot just well enough that Poly couldn't return it, letting third-seeded Sylmar celebrate on its home court. ``It was really hectic hec·tic adj. 1. Poly nearly pulled off a miracle comeback Comeback Australian breed of wool sheep, bred by crossing Merino with Corriedale, Polwarth or Zenith sheep; wool is 21 to 25 microns. The Spartans advanced to play the winner of Thursday night's quarterfinal between Taft and Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m). in the semifinals Tuesday. Sylmar reached the semifinals last year before falling to Palisades. Poly, which had been swept 3-0 in a preseason defeat to Sylmar in September, ended its season at 11-4. The Parrots pulled off a first-round upset against Granada Hills before losing Thursday. But first-year coach Aileen Feri could not have been more proud. ``They just came out and played strong against (Sylmar),'' Feri said. ``They were down 14-7, turned it up and came back. It was just an awesome, awesome job. And Sylmar's a really good team.'' The best battle of the match came at the net between Sylmar junior middle blocker Luz Rodriguez and Gillard, her counterpart from Poly. Both players wore No. 1 on the court and every critical point on the evening seemed to feature either one or the other. Rodriguez finished with 11 kills and Gillard led Poly with 12 kills and seven blocks. Rodriguez said she fed off both the enthusiasm of the crowd and playing against Gillard. ``She's such a good player,'' Rodriguez said. ``Every time she would block me, I was just like, `Whoa.' But then when I'd block her it was a pretty good feeling.'' At the end of the third game, Rodriguez had one of her kill attempts blocked by Gillard, before she put down another to give her team a sideout and the chance to serve out the game. Rodriguez delivered a huge block, one of three in the match, for the final point as Sylmar moved in front for good. In the opening game, however, Sylmar looked to be in for a quick night. The Spartans took to a 10-1 lead behind junior Nancy Villalobos's serve and three kills by Rodriguez. Feri called three timeouts in the game, which lasted barely 20 minutes. |
