Staff Writer The collective confidence of the Chatsworth girls' volleyball team was decimated in September by a stunning three-game, 51-minute loss to Sylmar. Now, Chatsworth has another shot at the Spartans, this time for the City championship at 7:30 p.m. today at Occidental College History The Birth of Occidental College Occidental College (commonly referred to as Oxy) was founded on April 20, 1887, by a group of Presbyterian clergy and laymen. . So what sparked the turnaround? ``I think more than anything that they just started believing in themselves again,'' coach Bud Dow said. ``After that loss to Sylmar, they had a hard time accepting the idea that a lot of people still thought they were the No. 2 team in the City. It was more of an attitude of, `Well, this will be over soon.' ``When they saw that we were actually seeded No. 2 in the playoffs, it was like, `Really? Still?' Since then, the top-seeded Spartans (16-0) have played well but never matched the level of intensity they had against Chatsworth. Chatsworth cruised through the West Valley League, mostly because its talent level was vastly superior to that of its opponents, as it tried to put the Sylmar loss behind it. ``When we played them on September 26, I made a couple of very stupid coaching decisions,'' Dow said. ``I tried to make a couple changes that ended up hurting us more than they helped us, as far as putting certain people in the game at certain times. This year's senior leaders, Stephanie Cisneros and Nancy Ariza, have been outspoken all season about finally winning the title. Ariza will play in her third championship match in four years, and this will be her last chance to match sisters Mayra (1994) and Ingrid (1996), who won City titles at Sylmar. ``All the girls have been looking forward to this for a year,'' coach Bob Thomson Robert 'Bob' Thomson was an English footballer who played during the early 20th century, mainly prior to World War I.
