CITY SECTION: CLEVELAND'S JONES SETS TWO RECORDS.

Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

LONG BEACH - Amy Jones was at it again Wednesday.

The junior from Cleveland High of Reseda, who seems to set records wherever she swims in the City Section preliminaries, did it in the 200- yard freestyle The code name for the MCE version of Windows. Jones - who is bound for the Olympic Trials in the 100 meters in August - won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:51.23, breaking the record of 1:52.90 set by Birmingham's Gretchen Ballard in 1994.

She then came back to win the 100 butterfly in 58.34, edging the 58.42 set by Granada Hills' Katherine Nielson in 1998.

With her performance on Wednesday, Jones has extended her streak to three straight years in which she has broken two records at the City Section prelims.

As a freshman she set records in the 50 and 100 freestyles, only to break those last year.

``Relief. It's such a relief,'' Jones said. ``It's so nice to get it out of the way; I seem to do a lot better when I don't have to worry about anything . . . . I just wanted to try for it in those events. I knew in my mind I could do it.''

Jones said her 200 freestyle time was disappointing, but she doesn't want to focus on the negatives. After all, this is the first year she's competed in the 200 freestyle and 100 butterfly in high school. She only made the switch because she had been struggling with the sprint events lately.

Jones knows she must get back to the 100 freestyle to be ready for the Olympic Trials and hopes to make the Olympic cut time in the 50 as well. Until her confidence in those events has been fully restored, Jones said breaking records in her newer events has lifted her spirits.

``I wanted to see if I could do better in other events and that makes me more confident in myself,'' Jones said. ``I shouldn't be upset when I'm doing bad in two events (50 and 100 freestyle), but doing so well in two other events.''

In the team competition, Granada Hills has established itself as the team to beat in the girls' meet. Again. The Highlanders have won the last five section championships and a sixth is likely.

Granada Hills' depth is illustrated by the 100 freestyle, where Highlanders swimmers claimed the top three seeds for the May 17 City Section finals.

Sophomore Jennifer Ward, who transferred from Sylmar and was made eligible for the event on Tuesday, was first in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Ward said a clerical error an error made in copying or writing.

``They liked it so much when they heard I was coming there,'' Ward said of her new teammates. ``They knew it would make our team stronger. We're pretty confident in winning next week. Of course, it would be nothing new if El Camino Real did finish second to Granada Hills - the Conquistadores have been second four of the last five years.
