Another year, another City Section team wrestling championship for El Camino Real High.

It has won the last four consecutive City titles - a section record - with the latest a 245-220 1/2 triumph over San Fernando at University High on Saturday.

Whatever glory the ECR program enjoyed in completing the task translated to an equal amount of frustration for San Fernando, which has finished second to ECR each time.

``We knew we'd have our ups and downs,'' ECR's 189-pound champion Jamar Cargo (38-5) said. ``For the most part, we thought we had a pretty good chance.''

The Conquistadores' point total eclipsed the 244 1/2 it scored last year - another City Section finals record. The team championship was also the school's 10th in the last 15 years. How do they continue to dominate the section?

``The coach before me (Milt Goffman) for 17 years opened all the doors for me,'' ECR coach Terry Fisher said. ``We also have a great school, faculty and coaches. Our kids are supported by the entire coaching staff, administration and faculty.''

For San Fernando, which has not won a City title since 1987, it's another offseason of preparations for the next showdown with ECR. On the positive side, the Tigers will only lose three seniors.

``It's getting old taking second,'' San Fernando coach Mike Castillo said. ``But I've got next season and it'll be close again. Their guys rise to the occasion every time and that's why they come out ahead. We just fall a little short.''

The Tigers' Willy German (160 pounds) did not fall short. The sophomore won his second section championship, defeating ECR's Alex Keyan by disqualification.

``I'm trying to follow Andy Morrow,'' German said, referring to the four-time City champion who graduated from San Fernando last year.

Monroe's Arthur Bryan (215 pounds) pinned San Fernando's Noe Ramirez after 1 minute, 23 seconds to earn his first most outstanding wrestler award and second trip to the state tournament, which takes place next Friday and Saturday in Stockton.

``I've got the most pins of anybody and the most wins,'' Bryan (43-1, 35 pins), ranked No. 2 by the Daily News, said of his most outstanding wrestler award. ``I always act like a nice guy at tournaments, so coaches like me.''

All individual champions will advance to the state tournament.

San Fernando's hopes for the team title took a blow during the preliminaries. Rene Hererra (152 lbs.) and Victor Solano (119 lbs.), both expected to reach the finals, were eliminated. That gave the Tigers only seven wrestlers in the finals, compared to nine for ECR.
