CITY SECTION: CHATSWORTH WANTS VIEW FROM TOP FALLING SHORT IN '02, CHANCELLORS VOW TO RETURN TO PROMINENCE.

Byline: Heather Gripp Staff Writer

Few teams would consider a 25-6 record and trip to the City Section semifinals a disappointing season. The Chatsworth High baseball team is one of those teams that would.

The Chancellors aren't satisfied with anything less than a City title. Falling short of that goal after being ranked No. 1 in the nation at one point last season has Chatsworth more determined than ever to regain its supremacy SUPREMACY. Sovereign dominion, authority, and preeminence; the highest state. In the United States, the supremacy resides in the people, and is exercises by their constitutional representatives, the president and congress. Vide Sovereignty. , a task the Chancellors appear ready to accomplish.

Not only is Chatsworth a favorite for the City title, it is the area's top representative in national preseason rankings, earning the No. 20 spot in Baseball America's poll.

``We don't really talk that much about a league title, honestly,'' Chancellors coach Tom Meusborn said. ``Our goal - as it is every year - is a City title. A league title is very nice, especially when you consider how competitive our league always is, but it's not what we've set out to win. We feel we're at a point in our program where if you aren't playing for a City title, it's a disappointment. I think that's part of the reason we've been so successful.''

Look for the success to continue.

``They're going to be the same Chatsworth,'' El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

of Woodland Hills coach Matt LaCour said. ``Every year you talk about the best teams in the area and they're always up there. It's not any different this year.''

What is different is this year's Chancellors feature several players who experienced what it is like not to be the best. Last season, Chatsworth went 8-5 in West Valley League play to end a streak of eight consecutive league titles and finish as low as third for the first time in Meusborn's 13-year career. The Chancellors, who had won two of the previous three City titles, were upset by No. 15 seed Cleveland of Reseda in the semifinals.

``Obviously that motivates us a lot,'' Chatsworth junior Jason Dominguez said. ``You finish 6-6 after a 19-0 start, you don't want that to happen again. We want to come back and have a good start and keep it going this time.

``It's pretty much unspoken. We know what we have to do. But Coach Meusborn brings it up every once in a while to make sure we don't forget.''

Opponents aren't forgetting the Chancellors' potential, either.

``Chatsworth will definitely be good,'' Sylmar coach Ray Rivera said. ``They've got those two studs on the mound mound, prehistoric earthwork erected over a burial place as a memorial or landmark, a defensive embankment, or a site for ceremonial or religious rites. Such structures are found in many parts of the world, but the name is applied in particular to those of North  and a lot more.''

Those studs on the mound are UC Irvine-bound Justin Cassel and fellow right-hander Dominguez, a third-year starter who was 5-1 in last season's crowded rotation.

How well senior Brett Munster adjusts to his move from third base to shortstop is one of Chatsworth's few uncertainties.

The Chancellors' toughest competition for the City title could come from within their own league.

Defending West Valley champion El Camino Real returns only four starters but has a fundamentally sound and disciplined group that includes three transfers from Chaminade of West Hills. Other teams to watch include last year's runner-up Sylmar of the Valley Mission League. The senior catcher was the Sunset Six League co-MVP as a sophomore, but off-field problems kept him sidelined most of last season. Ever since he returned to the field, his hitting has been good enough to put him among the nation's top 100 high school prospects.

If Lewis' former team, North Hollywood, can overcome the last-minute dismissal of its head coach, the Huskies have the talent to take the Sunset Six title led by the righty-lefty pitching duo of Erick Melara and Saul DeLaTorre.

``There's a lot of teams out there that have talent and should be competitive,'' Meusborn said.
