CITY RECONSIDERS PLAN TO DEMOLISH HISTORIC HOME HOUSE MAY BE MOVED INSTEAD OF LEVELED.

Preservationists have urged officials to spare a historic 1906 house, once owned by relatives of the city's pioneer Lopez family, that had been slated for demolition to build a senior housing complex.

The 1906 American Folk home at 1311 Pico Street is one of 16 dwellings the city wants to level to make room for a $14 million affordable senior housing project that will span 2.8 acres on two separate sites.

But city officials, who have yet to purchase the property, on Tuesday said they would consider moving the home to another location.

When Lopez died in 1921, the house went to his daughter, Louisa Lopez. She allowed her aunt, Isabel Villegas, to stay in the home. Villegas was a descendant of the first Spanish explorers to come over to California in what was later known as the Portola Expedition The Portola expedition was led from 1769 to 1770 by Gaspar de Portolà and was the first known attempt by Spain to explore Upper California by land. The purpose of the expedition was to secure territories in Upper California before the Russians.  of 1769, Brooks said.
