City officials hope to hire an architect in the next six months to create a design that would double the number of driving range stalls, from 20 to 40. A two-tier design is being considered because the existing range is bordered by a mountainside and a slope. Known among golfers The list of golfers has been split into two articles:
Now an 18-hole course, it was built in 1958. Though the course has since been improved, the practice range and clubhouse are no longer suitable, city officials said Thursday Thursday: see week. . Even so, construction is not expected to begin until 2004, said Michael Flad, the city's parks director. ``We would want to include the residents' opinions and concerns as part of the conceptual design,'' Flad said. ``It's very much in the preliminary stages.'' About 85,000 rounds of golf are played annually at the public course, which generates enough money to sustain itself, said Jan Bartolo, the city's deputy parks director. About $3 million in capital improvement funds generated from the golf course has been earmarked to make the improvements, Bartolo said. The full-service clubhouse, which is used for private parties as well as by the public on a daily basis, is dated and does not meet current building safety codes and standards. Golfers hitting balls on the course and at the range Thursday said the improvements are much needed. On any given weekday, people line up, waiting their turn at the range. ``Everybody is also looking forward to a new clubhouse,'' said Scott Scozzla, the head golf professional at the course. Resident Frank Nicosia said he has played golf at the DeBell course twice a week since 1962. He said he likes the way the golf course is set up. ``I hope they don't get too sophisticated,'' he said of the plans. ``This is one of Burbank's best-kept secrets.'' |
