CITY PLANS BID TO HOST '99 OR 2000 SUPER BOWL.

Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer

Despite the fact that Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  is no longer home to a professional football team, city officials announced Friday that they plan to join with Pasadena in bidding to host the National Football League's Super Bowl in either the year 1999 or 2000 at the Rose Bowl.

``The city has the opportunity to showcase Los Angeles to the world during the Super Bowl,'' said City Council President John Ferraro. ``In addition to the economic benefits, the Super Bowl is a powerful symbol of a great city.''

spokesman Greg Aiello said the team owners plan to vote at the end of October on where to hold the end-of-the-century championship games. The five cities and regions that were invited to submit bids are Los Angeles, South Florida, Atlanta, Arizona and Tampa.

Aiello said that the lack of an NFL team in the Los Angeles area ``doesn't disqualify To deprive of eligibility or render unfit; to disable or incapacitate.

the city'' from hosting a Super Bowl, but he added, ``The Super Bowl has never been played in a city that didn't have an NFL team.''

Los Angeles, which lost the Raiders and Rams last year, is continuing talks with the NFL about getting a new franchise for the city, but that the sticking point remains the need for a new, state-of-art stadium.

``We're continuing to talk to people about a stadium,'' Aiello said. ``That's the focus, developing a new stadium.''

Ferraro on Friday submitted a series of motions to the City Council, for consideration next week, that would put the city on record supporting a Super Bowl bid.

The motions commit the city of Los Angeles

Pasadena is expected to provide most of the services because the Rose Bowl is in that city.

In addition, the city of Los Angeles would offer to waive all taxes on NFL-sponsored special events held in Los Angeles as a result of the game in Pasadena.
