Family Golf was selected after the Los Angeles City Council refused to go along with the recommendation to award the concession to American Golf Corp., because of the political ties its owner has with Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Family Golf filed for bankruptcy shortly after winning the city concession, but still has been operating the facility under the terms of a federal court. Under the commission's action, it is asking the court to terminate its contract with Family Golf and bring in a new operator. One of the other bidders for the original contract, Michael Birnbach of Ready Golf, said his firm was prepared to step in immediately and take over the concession. In a separate action, the panel approved a new restaurant and food concession contract with Burrito King Inc., which has a similar contract for the Sherman Oaks Castle miniature golf course. The award of the contract came over the objections of Encino Glen Inc., which complained it had not been provided all the proper city forms to submit a correct bid. Parks officials agreed with that, but said it was the responsibility of the bidders to get the forms as they had been told in a letter. In winning the bid, Burrito King will be taking over operation of a new clubhouse scheduled to open in the next few months, officials said, moving it from trailers originally designed to be temporary facilities some 20 years ago. Burrito King said it will be making a $70,000 investment in equipment for the new facility and said it will provide rents of $65,000 the first year. |
