CITY PARK OPENS NEXT TO SCHOOL.

The new 8.4-acre Sycamore Canyon Sycamore Canyon is the second largest canyon in the Arizona redrock country, after Oak Creek Canyon. The 21 mile (33.6 km) long scenic canyon reaches a maximum width of about 7 miles (11.2 km) and is located in North Central Arizona below the Mogollon Rim northwest of Sedona.  Neighborhood Park - located at 502 S. Martha Morrison Drive - was constructed by Ventura contractor Nye and Nelson Inc. for an estimated $1.1 million. It includes a playground, a half-court basketball facility, a picnic area, extensive landscaping and lighted walkways, including a walkway from the park to the school.

``The development of our local parks is probably one of the most important aspects of the quality of our neighborhoods,'' said City Councilman Glen Becerra. ``They play a more important role than our regional parks.''

City officials in Simi Valley work with the city Department of Parks and Recreation to have new developers include smaller neighborhood parks Neighborhood parks, which generally range in size up to 30 acres, serve as a social and recreational focal points for neighborhoods and are the basic units of a park system. Many include a playground.  into their initial development agreements, Becerra said.
