``This is a tremendous addition to the city's park network,'' said Mayor Cameron Smyth Cameron Smyth is a Republican who has represented Califoria's 38th Assembly district since December of 2006. He succeeded Keith Richman who was term limited.

The city spent $3.4 million on this second phase of Central Park. The expansion doubled the size of the park to 80 acres and includes the extension of a trail that loops around the back of the park.

The new fields, and two open areas for practices, will relieve some of the pressure on the city's park facilities, which are in high demand by local football, softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  and soccer teams. Some teams have complained bitterly about having no place to practice, officials said.

``The addition will help a great deal, but it needs to be just one step in a continuing process of building more fields,'' said Steve Sager, a regional commissioner for the American Youth Soccer Organization.

At completion, Central Park will be 130 acres, officials said.

``We're hoping they won't hurt us that bad,'' said Councilwoman Laurene Weste.

The Parks and Recreation Commission might recommend that the City Council consider funding park development and programs through a bond measure and open-space purchases through an assessment district.
