CITY OKS TARZANA'S IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT.Byline: Patrick McGreevy Daily News Staff Writer Having received no formal protests by property owners, the Los Angeles City Council The council action, which includes appointment of a board to oversee operation of the district, creates the first of five BIDs proposed for stretches of Ventura in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills. . ``We're excited. We're ready to get started,'' said Dale Jacobs, president of the Tarzana Chamber of Commerce, one of several area business owners and residents who attended the council meeting. ``People come down from the mountains and drive right by our community to the mall,'' he said. ``This will put a stamp on the community and say, Here we are.'' The project has been in the works for five years and is a joint effort of the chamber, the Tarzana Improvement Association and the Tarzana Property Owners' Association. The assessments will raise $55,350 annually to pay for improvements. Under Proposition 218, the city had to hold an election to determine whether property owners supported or opposed the assessment. A large majority of the property owners voted for it. ``There is no protest,'' said Councilwoman Cindy Miscikowski Cindy Miscikowski represented the 11th District on the Los Angeles City Council for two full terms from 1997 through 2005. Previously, she was an aide to Councilman Marvin Braude and the Executive Director of the Skitball Cultural Center in its beginning stages. . ``This is the first of the BIDs on Ventura Boulevard.'' She said the proposal was developed cooperatively between home and business owners as a model for other BIDs. By making downtown Tarzana more attractive to shoppers, business owners hope it will better compete with shopping malls that have drawn away many customers. |
