Lacking the time or desire for a political honeymoon, City Councilman Ed Masry has launched his public service career by garnering approval for a chromium chromium (krō`mēəm) [Gr.,=color], metallic chemical element; symbol Cr; at. no. 24; at. wt. 51.996; m.p. about 1,857°C;; b.p. 2,672°C;; sp. gr. about 7.2 at 20°C;; valence +2, +3, +6.  6 study of the city's water supply.

At Masry's request, the council unanimously agreed late Tuesday to order its staff to work with the Calleguas Municipal Water District in developing a cost estimate for a treatment plant that would eliminate the suspected carcinogen carcinogen: see cancer.

``All the water purveyors say chromium 6 doesn't fluctuate,'' Masry said Wednesday. ``But our experience testing in the field shows that it does fluctuate. My concern is that the level could rise.''

Masry, who was sworn into office Nov. 28, said he had no idea what a plant might cost or whether construction of a plant would be a cost-efficient way to eliminate the industrial byproduct by·prod·uct or by-prod·uct

Earlier this fall, Masry's office conducted secret tests of Thousand Oaks water and found the water to be within the state's recommended safety level of 2 parts per billion for the chemical. Calleguas' follow-up tests showed the levels of chromium 6 to be lower than in Masry's independent tests.

Don Kendall, Calleguas' general manager, did not return calls. But he recently said he would abide by the council's action.

In other action, the council voted unanimously to ban nudity in public places and make violations punishable by up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine. The ordinance provides exemptions for children under 10 and nude models Nude model can refer to:
  • Model (art), modeling that has subjects pose without clothing as an aid in creating a work of art
  • Fetish model, modeling to add eroticism and sexuality to photography, graphic work, internet sites, and paintings
 in an art class.

``It certainly doesn't ban it in your own back yard,'' City Attorney Mark Sellers said. ``As far as the city is concerned, (that's) OK.''
