CITY OFFICIALS TO SEEK FUNDS FOR PROJECTS ROAD IMPROVEMENTS A PALMDALE PRIORITY.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Mayor Jim Ledford and Assistant City Manager Steve Williams Steve Williams may refer to:
  • Steve Williams (jazz drummer), Shirley Horn's accompanist and band leader
  • Steve Williams (rock drummer), drummer for heavy metal group Budgie
  • Steve Williams (wrestler), an American professional wrestler
will spend Thursday in Washington D.C. seeking help from lawmakers in financing the proposed widening of Avenue P and other projects.

Ledford and Williams plan to talk to U.S. Rep. Howard ``Buck'' McKeon, the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Republican whose district includes Palmdale, and also hope to talk to California's senators as well as to other lawmakers and officials.

``We try to get what we can. You've got every city in the nation doing the same thing,'' Ledford said.

Ledford and Williams plan to fly out Wednesday, visit officials Thursday and return Friday. The trip's estimated cost is $1,815, which is up for approval tonight by the City Council.

The trip's main topic will be transportation funding, particularly for the city's plan to widen Rancho ran·cho

$2.8 million to begin the widening at the intersection with Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling , but city officials say the total cost is around $30 million.

Easing access will better position the installation to compete for more work, Ledford said.

City Manager Bob Toone noted that there is a precedent: in the late 1980s, the federal government approved money for widening Avenue M, on the north side of Plant 42, where a new plant was built to assemble B-2 stealth bombers.

The officials also expect to talk about the proposal to extend Avenue P-8 as an expressway across eastern Palmdale, creating an alternative route for trucks and other traffic that now use Palmdale Boulevard, which is designated Highway 138 through downtown Palmdale.

Another subject will be flood-control facilities through central and eastern Palmdale, for which McKeon has also got partial past funding put on federal legislation.
