Peters brought her daughter, Jenayl, 8, for her first skating try on Sunday. Jenayl really took to the ice, Peters said. ``She's whizzing around like crazy,'' she said. Nancy O'Weger's daughter, Roxanne, 7, skated for the first time on the rink last week and returned for another round on Sunday. Her experience with in-line skates made the transition from cement to ice an easy one, O'Weger said. ``The Rollerblading has made it so much easier for them,'' O'Weger said. ``They love it.'' While Roxanne and Jenayl were taking their first steps, two West Hills ice skating veterans relived their childhood memories. ``I'm from Boston, so I grew up on skates,'' Michael Abbott said. ``Everybody skated.'' Abbott, who brought his own hockey skates to the rink, had not laced them up for eight years. His friend Betty Hogan, also a Boston native, had not stepped onto the ice in 15 years. The Thousand Oaks rink runs for a little more than a month, but back home in Boston frozen lakes and ponds gave children four good months of skating, Hogan said. The only complaint echoed by several skaters was that the rink was too small. New skaters said people were packed in too tightly when the rink was busy, while the veterans said that with the constant counter-clockwise turning, ``your right ankle gets a real workout,'' Abbott said. The ice rink was sponsored by a number of area businesses, including the Daily News. Through Jan. 3, the rink will be at City Hall, 2100 Thousand Oaks Blvd. CAPTION(S): Photo PHOTO (Color) Ice skaters of all ages circulate at the outdoor rink at Thousand Oaks City Hall on a balmy Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California.
