``This will create more of a responsible use of the park,'' said Mayor Jim Ledford. ``We don't want kids 14 and under being dropped off and left unsupervised.''

The new safety regulations will be considered by the City Council at its meeting 7 p.m. Wednesday in council chambers, 708 E. Palmdale Blvd.

State law protects cities operating skateboard parks from liability provided users are over 14 and wear safety gear. The liability immunity law, which went into effect in January, also requires cities to post signs stating that safety gear must be worn and that anyone failing to do so could be cited.

City staffers also had concerns about the skills and physical maturity of the younger skateboarders.

``In the short time since the public has used the skate park, staff has observed many young children using the facility, some of whom are not as skilled or as physically well-coordinated as the older ones,'' a city staff report said. ``This discrepancy DISCREPANCY. Depending on how well things go with this first park, the city is considering building a second facility at Dominic Massari Park to serve Palmdale's east side.

``This one is going over very, very well,'' Ledford said.

The skate park is the latest in a series of parks and recreation improvements made by Palmdale.
