As many as 40 applicants are expected to apply by the July 8 deadline for the job vacated when Brimhall retired in February after 20 years.

``The ideal candidate will be a person of vision who is able to assist the Council in both developing and achieving the vision for the future of Thousand Oaks. The new City Manager will have experience dealing with issues of a City nearing build-out,'' reads the three-page brochure.

The city manager's job will be to coordinate programs, oversee 480 employees and ensure Thousand Oaks remains in the black.

``At the same time, the ideal candidate will be capable of identifying opportunities for improving operations and reducing costs, including the ability to effectively analyze or identify areas that should be examined,'' the brochure says.

Among those weighing a decision to apply is Mary Jane Lazz, a veteran administrator who since February has been interim city manager.

Murray said he will screen applicants and call the most qualified back for interviews with him. He will submit his recommendations - about five to eight applicants - to the City Council by late July.

The council will have a chance to conduct additional interviews with the finalists in August and September, with a final selection expected to be made at some point in September.
