Citing its location and the continued threat to the Southern California region, Mayor James Hahn, Supervisor Don Knabe, Sheriff Lee Baca and Police Chief Bill Bratton made a case for the city be a regional office.

Ridge announced last week he was seeking local input to help determine where field offices should be opened. Officials said there was no deadline on when a decision would be made.

The officials said Los Angeles has been mentioned frequently as a high- profile target, with locations such as Los Angeles International Airport “LAX” redirects here. For other uses, see LAX (disambiguation).

The local officials said the area hosts numerous resources that are part of the homeland security system, including the Terrorism Early Warning Group, which coordinates local efforts, and the Homeland Security Center at USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. .

Los Angeles also will be home to two first-responder training and intelligence institutes, and also has experience in responding to emergencies, including natural disasters and civil disturbances.

``Many experts in the field of response and recovery reside in Los Angeles who would undoubtedly be willing to share their valuable expertise with the department,'' the letter said.
