Lancaster (lăng`kəstər), city (1991 pop. 43,902) and district, county seat of Lancashire, NW England, on the Lune River.
 - City officials said Tuesday that they expect the city to get a $2.9 million economic boost from the biggest softball softball, variant of baseball played with a larger ball on a smaller field. Invented (1888) in Chicago as an indoor game, it was at various times called indoor baseball, mush ball, playground ball, kitten ball, and, because it was also played by women, ladies'  tournament season yet in the 10 years they have promoted sports as a tourism attraction.

Lancaster officials announced a tournament schedule that would bring 925 teams and more than 13,000 players to the city this year. Last year, Lancaster attracted about 800 teams.

The season, which runs from March through December, will be anchored by two large Junior Olympic tournaments, the first over the July 4 weekend featuring 90 teams and the second in mid-October featuring 110 teams.

Sports tournaments bring in about $100,000 to the Park Plaza alone, Secka said.

The city has steadily built up its tournament schedule, starting with 252 teams and 3,500 players in 1994. Those tournaments featured primarily regional tournaments.

This season will have two state championships and six national championships.
