CITY LIFTS ALCOHOL-LICENSE CAP.

Byline: Donna Huffaker Staff Writer

GLENDALE - An increase in the population of Glendale has prompted state alcohol officials to lift a five-year-long moratorium on new beer and wine licenses in the city.

City officials insist that does not mean there will be a glut glut pronounced as rut, slut Vox populi An excess of a service or skilled labor in a particular area. ``I find this disappointing because research has shown when there is an increase in liquor outlets, the rate of consumption increases and alcohol- related problems increase,'' said Al Jeffries, executive director of the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (NCADD) was founded in 1944 by the first female member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Marty Mann (1905-1980), and has a nationwide network of 95 affiliates. , San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Businesses in Glendale and a score of other cities around the state can apply for new permits to sell beer and wine because the ratio of licensed liquor outlets to population falls in the realm of 1 for every 2,500 inhabitants

In Glendale, there are 340 liquor licenses. Eighty-one of those are beer and wine licenses for businesses that sell alcohol to be consumed elsewhere, DeWing said. There are 203,734 Glendale residents, which equals 1 licensed outlet for every 2,515 people.

State and local officials could not say how many new permits will be available, but said those interested will have to apply for them and abide by the permit rules.

``It's not like this means getting a liquor license is going to be automatic now,'' said Lt. Lief Nicolaisen, whose department oversees all ABC licenses in the city. ``Glendale is not going to be flooded with new liquor businesses.''

Many steps are required before the city gives a nod to a new business, Nicolaisen said. The city still has to issue conditional use permits and the zoning department has to ensure the business is appropriate for the area, he said.
