CITY JOINS STATEWIDE ADULT LITERACY DRIVE.

Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  is among 80 cities statewide that have signed on to a literacy awareness campaign that kicked off this week.

Cities That Read, sponsored by the California Literacy Inc., celebrated International Literacy Day September 8 was proclaimed International Literacy Day by UNESCO on November 17, 1965. It was first celebrated on 1966. Its aim is to highlight the importance of literacy to individuals, communities and societies. Celebrations are taking place around the world [1].  on Monday with the launch of a drive aimed at mobilizing mobilizing,
v 1. freeing or making loose and able to move.
2. observing any ongoing movements in a client's body, whether small or large, assisted or not, that identify strengths and weaknesses, as well as the client's physical and
 government, businesses and the media to make adult literacy a priority issue throughout California.

Organizers say one in four California adults has not mastered basic reading and writing skills. For people with low literacy skills, simple tasks like reading a job application, understanding a medicine bottle, completing a voter VOTER. One entitled to a vote; an elector.  application form or enjoying a book with their children are extremely difficult, if not impossible, to perform.

``Because of their limited literacy skills, these people face difficulty advancing in the workplace,'' said Lisa Bennett-Garrison, the organization's executive director. ``They also will not benefit from adequate health care or education, and, in many cases, their children will follow in their footsteps.''

Cities who signed onto the campaign committed to increasing adult literacy. Cities That Read offers help to cities in establishing adult literacy programs or support for existing programs. Development of a Mayors Literacy Network, and promotional ads, materials and activities highlighting the issue are also part of the campaign.

California Cities That Read currently include Burbank, Glendale, Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , Palmdale and San Fernando San Fernando, city, Argentina
San Fernando (săn fərnăn`dō), city (1991 pop. 144,761), Buenos Aires prov., E Argentina. It is a district administrative center in the Greater Buenos Aires area.
. The program is open to all city and demands no municipal funds.
