CITY HAS PLANS FOR LAND; PARCELS BEING ACQUIRED IN DOWNTOWN PALMDALE.

Byline: Charles F. Bostwick Staff Writer

City officials are negotiating with downtown property owners to buy a two-block strip of land connecting Courson Park to the expanding Civic Center.

Over several years, city officials expect to buy the blocks bordered by Avenues Q-9 and Q-11, tear down the small apartment complexes and most of the aging houses there and replace them with small parklike areas, walkways, shuffleboard shuffleboard, sport in which players use cue sticks to push disks onto a scoring diagram at either end of a concrete or terrazzo court. The court is 52 ft (15.85 m) long and 6 ft (1.83 m) wide. The bases of the triangular scoring diagrams are parallel to and 8 ft (2.  courts and horseshoe pits, and senior-citizen apartments.

``We've acquired some property already. We're really looking at people who want to sell,'' Mayor Jim Ledford said this week.

The project is part of the city's rehabilitation and enlargement of the Civic Center area, including the construction now under way of a courthouse and a new City Hall building, and the greenbelt created with the removal of two bars, an adult book store and other businesses along Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling .

City officials are interviewing architectural firms in preparation for hiring one to prepare a plan for what city officials call the ``Courson Connection.'' The preliminary plan could be ready by October or November, though the project itself is likely to take three or four years, officials said.

Some of the houses could be retained as a senior clubhouse, library or craft room, officials said. People have suggested turning Fire Station 33, which is in the area, into a museum once a new station is built on Sierra Highway at Avenue Q, the mayor said.

Council members will discuss in closed session Wednesday night possible offers to purchase eight vacant lots on the two blocks. The city focused first on acquiring boarded-up buildings, then on vacant lots, then on willing sellers of occupied buildings, officials said.
