CITY GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP: WITH FROSH, PALISADES BACK ON TOP.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Daily News Staff Writer

They're back.

Palisades Palisades, cliffs along the west bank of the Hudson River, NE N.J. and SE N.Y., extending from N of Jersey City, N.J., to the vicinity of Piermont, N.Y., with a general altitude of from 350 ft to 550 ft (107–168 m).  High, which ruled City Section golf from the late 1960s to mid-80s, returned to the top impressively Monday.

The Dolphins, getting a 7-under-par 65 from freshman Ed Turner Ed Turner was a CNN executive vice president and one of the first people Ted Turner hired in 1980 to help make his dream of a 24/7 news network a reality.

Granada Hills at Wilson GC to claim their 11th City championship in 31 years and first since 1986.

Palisades, which did not field a golf team from 1991-97, produced individual City champions in the first two years of its comeback (both by Burley bur·ley

Stamps) before claiming the team title and a third straight individual winner (Turner) this year.

The start of something big, again?

``I hope so,'' said Palisades coach James Paleno after his team shot 381 Monday to finish with 795 and roar past early leader and eventual runner-up Granada Hills (803). ``We've got a lot of young players this year and some good ninth-graders coming up.''

The Dolphins had the best ninth grader on the premises Monday, as Turner birdied seven holes in a bogeyless round Granada Hills coach Joe White called the best he could remember on the 6,947-yard, par-72 Wilson course.

``When you can shoot a 65, that makes up for a lot,'' White said.

The Dolphins made up two strokes on mid-way leader Hamilton and overcame a Granada Hills closing round of 392 that had White congratulating his players even after the Palisades title.

``We played very well,'' said White, whose team was led by Darrin Schneider (72), Jon Huppert (79), Jay Limsingian (81), Kyu Sin (82) and Saki Uechi (78). ``But they (Dolphins) had a powerful round.''

Chris Whitaker Chris Whitaker (born 19 October 1974) is an Australian rugby union footballer. He is a much acclaimed scrum-half for Leinster in Ireland. He previously played for the New South Wales Waratahs, a state team representing New South Wales in the Super 14.  (78), Tye Alexander (77), Jake Sugarman (79) and Bo Kim (84) completed the scoring for Palisades. Alexander and Sugarman and are the only seniors in that group, and the Dolphins also used rounds from junior John Sklar during the 36-hole City tournament.

Turner edged Birmingham's Scott Bashin (75-77-152) for the individual title by making a 12-foot birdie putt on the final hole to finish at 151. The 65 capped not only a sensational round but also a brilliant comeback, as Turner had shot 86 in Friday's tournament opener.

Chatsworth (818), San Pedro (823) and Birmingham (826) placed 3-4-5 in the 14-team competition that qualified the top two teams and top 10 individuals not on those two teams to the June 8 CIF/SCGA Championship in Murietta.
