CITY FAMILY BOOSTS THE POPPY COFFERS; Help at hand to keep tradition alive.

Byline: MARY MURTAGH

SELLING poppies is a family tradition for the Gettys.

Three generations of this Speke family -- grandmother Sandy, daughter Carrol and five-year-old grandson Charlie -- take to the streets to sell the distinctive paper flowers as an act of remembrance.

This year is no different and Sandy, Carrol and Charlie will be collecting cash to help the Royal British Legion help ex servicemen and their families.

Sandy, 51, said: ``We always collect about a week before Poppy Day and get hundreds of pounds. It is important for us, as a family, to remember. ''

Sandy was in the Women's Royal Army Corps The Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC; sometimes pronounced acronymically as IPA: /ˈræk/, a term unpopular with its members) was the corps to which all women in the British Army except medical, dental and veterinary  for several years and her husband Peter spent 22 years with the Royal Artillery “RGA” redirects here. Carrol said: ``Charlie loves it. It really is a family tradition. My dad is really involved with the Legion and we know how important their work is. ''

The ECHO launched an appeal last month to recruit the next generation of poppy sellers.

Dozens of volunteers have stepped forward to help keep this great British tradition alive.

But more helpers are still needed because there are still areas in Merseyside where it is very difficult to find a poppy seller.

And a special team is required to help man a Poppy van which will be parked in the city centre in the run up to Poppy Day.

Situated on the corner of Church Street and Hanover Street, from November 6, people will be able to pop in to buy a poppy.

A Poppy Shop will be running at the Royal British Legion, Damwood Road, Speke, so members of the public and any Legion Poppy organisers will be able to order wreaths and poppies from this shop.

The shop -- which is contactable on 0151 486 5769 -- will be open from noon until 4pm from October 25.
