CITY EYES EL NINO UPGRADES; RESIDENTS MAY GET HOME REPAIR HELP.

Low- and moderate-income homeowners who want to prepare their homes for predicted El Nino deluges may get a helping hand from the city.

The City Council on Tuesday will discuss allocating $50,000 for vouchers and rebates for roof and gutter In typography, the space between two columns.  repairs and replacements, tree trimming and drain clearing. An additional $10,000 would be set aside to administer the program.

Scientists have been predicting above-average rainfall will accompany El Nino, a warming trend in the Pacific Ocean.

If the council approves the plan, low- and moderate-income residents would be eligible for vouchers and rebates of $500 for fixing or replacing their roofs. The city also would offer rebates of up to $300 for tree trimming and work on gutters and drains.

The city prefers to help people make repairs now rather than help them clean up after the storms hit, Cragle said.
