, the recommendation against the show has motivated the council to find another stage.

Council members Tuesday night instructed city employees to study alternate sites acceptable to sheriff's and fire officials and determine potential private donors.

``Why do I want to send our citizens out of the community?'' asked Councilwoman Laurene Weste. ``We need to deal with our family events here.''

The upper field at Hart High would not be able to accommodate the estimated 10,000 people that would attend, according to a city report.

Emergency vehicles, for example, would not be able to access the clogged area and private property could be damaged, said sheriff's Capt. Don Rodriguez.

Despite the search for a space, some council members have expressed skepticism about sponsoring a fireworks display, which could cost $70,000.

``I really don't like the idea of spending taxpayer money on it,'' said Councilwoman Jan Heidt. The money, she said, could be better spent.

Mayor Jo Anne Darcy agreed.

``I know how much we need for parks and recreation programs and sports, so I'm really tied up about it,'' Darcy said.

Community support, however, has pushed Darcy to support a fireworks show, she said.

``A couple hundred people easy'' have called and sent letters to City Hall, Darcy said.

Additionally, representatives from the nonprofit group Theatre Arts for Children, which is raising money for the Newhall Elementary School Auditorium's conversion into a community theater, said a many people requested a fireworks show at its Country Fair last year.

Although safety supercedes cost in producing the show, the city is counting on nonprofit organizations and individuals to chip in, Darcy said.
