CITY COUNCIL WILL RETAIN ROLE IN PARADE FLOATS; GLENDALE KEEPS THE STATUS QUO.Byline: Lee Condon Staff Writer The Glendale City Council on Tuesday decided to retain veto power over the design of the city's float entry in the Tournament of Roses parade The Tournament of Roses Parade was established, and first held, on January 1,1890, in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles. Rooted in tradition, this parade is broadcast on multiple television networks, watched by upwards of one . ``With $60,000 of taxpayer money involved, elected officials ought jolly well have something to say about it,'' said Glendale Mayor Ginger Bremberg. The council considered dropping its oversight role because of a controversy earlier this year over the float design picked by the nonprofit Glendale Rose Float Association. The float featured a basset hound basset hound, breed of short-legged, long-bodied hound developed centuries ago in France. It stands from 12 to 15 in. Reluctant council members ended up being the final arbiters. In the end, the council decided to keep the dog, but asked the float association to pick a new name. The association chose ``Havin' Fun Yet.'' The council traditionally has rubber-stamped the float association's pick, but the controversy this year raised questions about who should have the final say. While the city contributes $60,000 annually to build the float, the association members do the legwork leg·work n. At the Tuesday meeting, council members discussed three options. Besides retaining the veto, they considered handing over it to the Parks and Recreation Commission or letting the nonprofit Glendale Rose Float Association pick the float on their own. The city is contributing $60,000 to this year's $90,000 float. The float association is now holding fund-raising events to raise the $30,000 they have pledged to the float budget. |
