CITY COUNCIL VOTES TO CLEAR 940 OAK TREES BUFFER ZONE TO BE PLANTED BETWEEN DUMP AND HOMES.

 as many as 940 mature oak trees, marking the last environmental clearance needed before the groundbreaking for a new 55 million-ton dump.

Tree clearing will start immediately, Browning Ferris Industries officials said. Crews will have to stay 300 to 500 feet away from nesting birds.

``Unfortunately, despite all of our efforts to not take trash to landfills ... we still have trash, and trash has to go to landfills,'' said Commissioner Janice Wood. ``Landfills are absolutely a part of our civilization.''

In a recent recount of oaks on the property, an independent consultant for the city tallied 745 mature oaks and 187 young oaks that wouldn't be replaced. BFI BFI - brute force and ignorance  committed to replacing 940 oaks, a number a company-hired consultant came up with during an earlier recount.

The company still needs building permits for a few construction facilities. And it has an appeal pending with state water regulators to overturn a requirement that the new landfill be built with a double liner liner /lin·er/ (lin´er) material applied to the inside of the walls of a cavity or container for protection or insulation of the surface.
