CITY COUNCIL MAY FIRE SHOT AT BOW HUNTING.

Byline: Susan Abram Staff Writer

BURBANK - Targeting what some see as a potentially dangerous situation, the City Council today will consider imposing a ban on hunting with bows and arrows in the foothills.

The issue has come before the council because of hikers' complaints that bow hunters are stalking deer in the Verdugo Mountains The Verdugo Mountains are a small mountain range located just south of the western San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County, Southern California, The United States of America (USA). The range is commonly known simply as the Verdugos. .

``Unfortunately, there is a stereotype of hunters in general,'' said Craig Fritz, a Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Fritz claimed there is no way a bow-hunter would mistake a person for a deer, for example. He said bow hunters must be at least 30 feet from their target, and all must take certified hunting-safety courses.

Fritz said people may be squeamish squea·mish

``Most of us really get into the aesthetics of what it is to hunt with a bow and arrow bow and arrow, weapon consisting of two parts; the bow is made of a strip of flexible material, such as wood, with a cord linking the two ends of the strip to form a tension from which is propelled the arrow; the arrow is a straight shaft with a sharp point on one ,'' said Fritz, a hunting and safety educator who has published literature on the subject.

``When you get out there, you have to be really close to the animals in a sense. You have to understand them and have an affinity for them and nature. There's a mystical value to hunting with a bow and arrow. It's something our forefathers forefathers nplantepasados mpl

Despite ``no hunting'' signs plastered throughout the foothills, city laws now allow hunting with a bow and arrow more than 300 feet from a street or structure.

City officials say that it's time It's Time was a successful political campaign run by the Australian Labor Party (ALP) under Gough Whitlam at the 1972 election in Australia. ``This is just a matter of good planning for the future,'' said Burbank City Manager Robert ``Bud'' Ovrom. ``We have been encouraging our residents to participate in more outdoor activities, especially hiking from the Steoughs Nature Center, and there's been talk of allowing overnight camping, which is why we believe we should make bow-hunting prohibited. We view it as incompatible with camping.''
