CITY COUNCIL AGREES TO MATCH $40,000 FOR VETERANS MEMORIAL.

After more than a decade of trying to build a memorial to honor Santa Clarita Valley The Santa Clarita Valley is the valley of the Santa Clara River in Southern California. It stretches through Los Angeles County and Ventura County. Its main population center is the city of Santa Clarita. The valley was part of the 48,612-acre (19,672.  war veterans, the City Council approved a plan on Tuesday for Veterans Memorial Plaza in downtown Newhall.

``I couldn't be happier that we're making progress instead of standing still,'' said Johnson, the founder of the Historic Veterans Memorial. ``It's taken a long time just to get to this place.''

The plaza is slated to be built on a triangular lot at the intersection of Newhall Avenue, and Market and Walnut streets A number of streets are named Walnut Street:
  • Walnut Street (Harrisburg)
  • Walnut Street (Philadelphia)
Walnut Street may also refer to:
  • Walnut Street Bridge
  • Walnut Street (NJT station), in Montclair, New Jersey
, and will include groves of oak trees, a fountain, trellises and a promenade.

``There is a lot of hard work ahead,'' Johnson said.

City officials purchased the property and funded the master plan and design with a $250,000 state grant obtained by former Assemblyman as·sem·bly·man

The veterans committee is selling commemorative bricks to partly finance the construction, officials said. So far, the group has raised more than $7,000. The city has agreed to match donations up to $40,000.

City officials anticipate that the final design of the plaza will be complete in May, with construction ready to begin in August. However, the council has not set aside any money for the project, and will not know total cost until the design is finished.
