CITY COOL TO LIQUOR LICENSE REQUEST RESTAURANT, OWNER FAMILIAR TO POLICE.

Byline: Alex Dobuzinskis Staff Writer

BURBANK - The new owner of Gitana restaurant, once part of an entertainment complex that was closed by the city after frequent run-ins with police, has applied for a liquor license Noun 1. liquor license - a license authorizing the holder to sell alcoholic beverages

to transfer the license from the Middle East Connection, the Burbank restaurant he previously operated.

Serving liquor to Gitana restaurant customers, Georges said, would be essential for the establishment to survive.

``It's not a fast-food restaurant where you don't need liquor with dinner,'' he said.

Georges does not have a liquor license because Gitana's previous owner, ADRD ADRD Alzheimer Disease and Related Dementias

In yanking the permit to operate, the council cited statistics that from October 2002 to July 2003, police were called to the location more than 70 times, resulting in more than $7,000 in costs. Police had to break up fights and authorities were concerned about the number of drunken drunk·en

 driving arrests connected to Gitana.

In a letter to the state agency reviewing Georges' application, Burbank Assistant Community Development Director Art Bashmakian said such incidents have continued at the location. He wrote that on Jan. 16, Burbank police responded to a fight involving Gitana security guards and a drunken patron.

Because of the crowd at Gitana that night, 18 police officers were needed. Burbank officials contend that incidents at Gitana draw officers away from other parts of the city.

Bashmakian also wrote that Georges or his son was apparently involved in the operation of Gitana since the council forced the business to become just a restaurant, and the Georgeses ``operated the business for several months without a valid business permit.''

Georges said he only took over the business last month. Georges said he only wants to have a restaurant where customers can order alcohol and has no plans to revive To renew.
