SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  -- The city is taking steps to ban smoking in Santa Clarita parks as well as on trails, bike paths and city-owned wilderness.

While cigarette smoking was banned in 2002 from park playground areas, the City Council will look Tuesday at a broader ban. The Parks and Recreation Commission endorsed the ban in a 4-1 vote in September.

The goal is to protect public health, Rick Gould, Santa Clarita's parks chief, said Thursday.

``The basis of the recommendation is twofold -- to protect public health, especially children, and to eliminate cigarette litter,'' Gould said.

A proposed ordinance is based on federal studies and recommendation that classifies secondhand smoke secĀ·ondĀ·hand smoke

A city recommendation quotes a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), agency of the U.S. Public Health Service since 1973, with headquarters in Atlanta; it was established in 1946 as the Communicable Disease Center.  study that found that secondhand smoke hits children hard -- causes lower respiratory tract Noun 1. lower respiratory tract - the bronchi and lungs

Approval of the ordinance would allow the city to prohibit smoking at its swimming pools, softball and soccer fields, skate park and other facilities. The ban would extend to Santa Clarita's bike and hiking trails, but not to the privately owned paseo systems that feed them, Gould said.

City spokeswoman Gail Ortiz said the ban was proposed in line with the Health Santa Clarita campaign. If approved, the ban likely would be in place early next year.

``We get occasional requests to ban smoking beyond just the tot lots. This is the logical next step,'' Ortiz said.

The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. , San Fernando, Huntington Beach, San Francisco, Calabasas and San Diego are among the California cities that have banned smoking at public recreation areas.
