Byline: Jim Skeen Staff Writer

PALMDALE - Palmdale officials are considering spending up to $150,000 to field a float for the 2006 Tournament of Roses Parade The Tournament of Roses Parade was established, and first held, on January 1,1890, in Pasadena, California, eight miles (13 km) northeast of Downtown Los Angeles.

Rooted in tradition, this parade is broadcast on multiple television networks, watched by upwards of one

The council will consider the parade funding at its meeting on Monday.

The Tournament of Roses Association estimates that 50 million Americans watch the parade on TV. Pasadena officials estimate that 1 million people attend the parade and another 100,000 people visit the post-parade viewing area.

``I think it would be a good economic development advertising tool,'' said Councilman Steve Hofbauer. ``We can show the rest of the world who we are.''

City staffers said discussions with float designers, the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Association, and numerous Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. A volunteer committee led by Lancaster resident Mary Rainwater spearheaded last year's effort to field the Antelope Valley's first Rose Parade float in decades. The float, built by a professional float company, depicted de·pict

That entry was believed to have been the first Antelope Valley float in the parade since 1959. The volunteers had difficulty coming up with the money to finance the float, with Rainwater and her family taking on loans to help pay for it. The float won the trophy for floats 35 feet long and shorter.
