Love it or hate it, L.A.'s got style.

Here, in the city of angels, movie stars and ``Baywatch'' babes, fashion designers are known for clothing with edge and attitude.

One of the front-runners this year is Trina Turk, the 37-year-old L.A. sportswear designer who was named CaliforniaMart's Designer of the Year at a black-tie gala Sunday night Sunday Night, later named Michelob Presents Night Music, was an NBC late-night television show which aired for two seasons between 1988 and 1990 as a showcase for jazz and eclectic musical artists.  at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills Beverly Hills, city (1990 pop. 31,971), Los Angeles co., S Calif., completely surrounded by the city of Los Angeles; inc. 1914. The largely residential city is home to many motion-picture and television personalities. .

. It's a great place, and I find inspiration here every day,'' she told the audience. And she means it.

Away from the podium she said, ``The L.A. fashion industry is on the upswing. It's a place where you can dress to express yourself, and the city accepts it.''

Since she started her own business three years ago, Turk's line of sporty womenswear that bears her name has a reputation for fine fit and workmanship. She admires Calvin Klein's simplicity of line and Jean Paul Jean Paul: see Richter, Johann Paul Friedrich.  Gaultier's original take on classics.

Turk competed against four other high-profile local designers nominated by members of the fashion press. They were Judy Rabineau for Mica, William B., Rozae Nichols, and Gregg and Holly Fiene of XOXO XOXO Hugs and Kisses

In a separate category, Cynthia Vincent of St. Vincent was honored with the Rising Star Award for growth potential in the fashion industry. She hugged everyone in sight, waved her trophy and thanked Ron Herman for giving her a start at his store and Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Vincent, who's known for glamorous Valley girl ensembles, competed against nominees Dana Dartez of 26 Red Sugar, William Sung and Betty Kim of Bette Paige, Monah Li, and Shawn Janet and Craig Harwood for State of the Heart.

E! Entertainment Television executive Fran Shae and Ron Herman of Fred Segal Fred Segal is a Los Angeles, California based clothing boutique. There are two stores, one in Hollywood (on Melrose Avenue) and the other in Santa Monica.

In 1976, the Hollywood location was purchased by Ron Herman.

The awards ceremony is sponsored by the CaliforniaMart, which houses 10,000 clothing lines in its downtown building. Platinum sponsors included Chatsworth designer David Dart, the XOXO company, Ojai Valley Inn and Woodland Hills-based hair and cosmetic company Sebastian International.

The program featured runway shows of each nominee's spring '99 collections and raised more than $20,000 for the Starlight Children's Foundation.
