CITY CHAMPS AGAIN BIRMINGHAM CLAIMS 2ND TITLE IN THREE YEARS BIRMINGHAM 36, DORSEY 13.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Birmingham High of Lake Balboa Balboa, town (1990 pop. 2,751), Colón prov., in the former Panama Canal Zone, on the Gulf of Panama. The port for Panama City, Balboa was the administrative headquarters of the Panama Canal Zone. It was also the site of a U.S. navy base (closed 1999).  got a late start in building a football powerhouse A fourth-generation language from Cognos that was introduced in the late 1970s for midrange computers. But in five years, a football program that was one of the worst in the City Section has established a resume that rivals the best Valley schools have produced in more than 90 years of competition.

Birmingham won its second City Section championship in three years Friday, beating Dorsey of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  36-13 in front of an estimated 5,500 at the Coliseum Coliseum: see Colosseum. .

Those two titles, added to Birmingham's 1963 championship, were all it took to vault the Patriots near the top for Valley schools in a section that has traditionally been dominated by the city.

High, with four titles from 1953 to 1975, has more titles among Valley teams than Birmingham. Sylmar and Granada Hills are next with two apiece. Poly of Sun Valley won five championships while located downtown before moving to the Valley in 1957.

Unable to get enough pass protection to throw consistently and clinging to a small lead, Birmingham turned to its running game to take control in the second half. Senior running back Brian Stuart led the way with 219 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries.

Dorsey had the momentum since the first quarter and it appeared to be just a matter of time before the Dons took the lead.

Up by two points late in the third quarter, Birmingham came out and pounded the ball right into the strength of the Dons' defense.

The Patriots lined up in its power-pitch offense and ran 10 plays in a row right at Dorsey's big defensive line. Miramontes converted on fourth-and-4 with a 12-yard run on a naked bootleg, the only time Birmingham went outside on the series. Stuart broke a tackle and scored on a 15-yard run to give the Patriots a more comfortable 21-13 lead.

Dorsey quickly moved into Birmingham territory but De Juane Adams stripped the ball from a Dorsey receiver and Hunter Rothman recovered the fumble at the Birmingham 29. The Patriots stuck with the ground game and pulled away on an 8-yard touchdown run by freshman Milton Knox.

The victory continued Birmingham's impressive habit of avenging regular-season losses in the playoffs. The Patriots upset Taft of Woodland Hills in the 2002 final after being routed earlier. Now Birmingham (10-4) has knocked out the two City Section teams to beat it this season in Taft and Dorsey.

Birmingham appeared to be running away with the game early. Miramontes completed all five passes on the Patriots' opening possession, hitting Jesse Salazar on a 19-yard touchdown pass. Stuart converted a 2-point conversion to put Birmingham ahead 8-0.

The Patriots forced three-and-outs on Dorsey's first two drives. Knox gave Birmingham a 15-0 lead on a 15-yard touchdown run.

That loss dropped Birmingham's record to 2-3. The Patriots started with a brutal schedule.
