CITY CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKET: RODRIGUEZ IS BACK, AND G. HILLS ROMPS.

Byline: Daily News

When receiver Joey Rodriguez went down with a shoulder injury three weeks ago, the Granada Hills offense began to sputter.

But with his much-anticipated return, the Highlanders were back in sync, and the timing couldn't have been sweeter.

Rodriguez scored a pivotal touchdown in the fourth quarter to help Granada Hills high defeat Westchester 30-12 in City Championship first- round playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

 at Westchester Thursday night.

Westchester (9-2) was seeded third entering the playoffs - but that didn't faze Granada Hills (8-3), the 14th seed.

Robert Ortega's 31-yard touchdown run and Gilbert Chavez's 29-yard field goal gave the Highlanders a 10-0 lead in the second quarter.

The Highlanders increased their margin to 16-0 when Bobby Baca completed a 13-yard pass to Bryan Wilson.

Westchester came back in the third quarter, though. Quarterback Jason Benson scored on touchdown runs of 15 and 2 yards to close the gap to 16-12.

Granada Hills struggled in the third quarter as it gained only 9 yards and had no first downs.

In the fourth quarter, Granada Hills used ball control and solid defense to hold off Westchester. Rodriguez scored on a 2-yard run with 7 minutes remaining to give Granada Hills a 23-12 lead.

``It helps our offense to have him back,'' Highlanders coach Daryl Stroh said.

Baca completed 9 of 19 attempts for 138 yards and two touchdowns, and Ortega finished with 93 yards on 22 carries.
